Good To Go In Hanoi French Quarter

Welcome to Hanoi, a city you will either fall in love with or passionately hate. The charm of this city is evident if you are looking; yet the eye is of the beholder. The summers here are brutally sticky and hot. The streets are swarming with locals, expats, and tourist's seated curbside on miniature plastic chairs drinking tra chanh (lemon tea), socializing, and trying to stay cool. In contrast, the winters can be grim and cold. Unlike most other Southeast Asian cities, Hanoi does not stay warm year round and you will find people bundled up and keeping warm with a small glass of tra nong (hot tea). The best times to visit are October to November or April to May for pleasant weather and beautiful blossoms. For colorful festivities come right before Tet, Vietnam's New Year. During Tet most things are closed and the streets fairly quiet.

Street Crossing:

You may be thinking, “How hard can it be to cross the street?" Well, this city will have you thinking again. Imagine extreme rush hour, without rules, traffic lights, or crosswalks, and there you have it! Hanoi has millions of motorbikes and an ever-growing number of cars flowing through the streets like an army of lost ants. Two words: Organized Chaos! The trick is to take a deep breath, be aware, and walk slowly and confidently. The traffic will move around you and whatever you do, don't panic or make sudden moves backwards. If in doubt, follow the lead of a local.

Vietnamese Dong:

ATMs are easily accessible and the VND is 21.000 to the USD (2013). For the latest exchange rate see www.oanda.com. One thing to keep in mind is that many ATMs have a 2 million VND maximum withdrawal (approx. 100 USD), while others allow up to 5 or 10 million VND.

Taxis:

To lower your chances of being ripped off, we recommend taking a taxi with a more reputable name, such as: Taxi Group, Mai Linh, or ABC. From the airport to Hanoi city center the cost is usually a fixed rate of
350.0 VND, but always check with the driver before you hop in. Aside from noi bai airport transfers, always try to get a metered taxi or negotiate a price beforehand. Should there be a problem, take note of the number on the right window corner of the taxi and report the taxi driver to the company's service center. This phone number can be found on the taxi window or door.

Xe Om:

As you walk the streets you will be summoned with the words xe om or see signs that read the same. Xe om means motorbike taxi and the drivers are as prevalent as the rats in New York City. You have not experienced Hanoi until you are whipping through traffic on the back of a xe om. Be sure to negotiate prices before you hop aboard. As a general guideline,
7.0 VND/km is reasonable.

Tips:

There are no rules when it comes to tipping in Vietnam. Most restaurants add a 5% service charge to the end of the bill automatically. For places that do not, there is no need to feel obliged. If the service was good, it is a nice gesture to tip and anything between 10.000 and 30.000 VND will be appreciated. If the service is poor, don't bother.

Good Night In Hanoi French Quarter

I: ROCK IT

Hanoi has a midnight curfew that the police are normally very strict about. It is an experience in itself to stay at a bar until midnight and watch the police authorities come in small trucks to force guests out. It makes you feel like you're a youngster with a curfew living on the edge. If you are a rebel party animal who wants to stay out after-hours we got you covered. Check out the spots below and if you are lucky they'll stay open till the last man (or woman) drops. Unfortunately, in an unpredictable city like Hanoi Old Quarter there are no safe bets. Are you ready to spin the wheel?

1: Bar-hopping on Ta Hien Street

The infamous Bar Street in the Hanoi Old Quarter has just been revamped to look more appealing. During the daytime hours, Ta Hien Street acts as a normal food street, but by night time it turns into a bar street, which allows people to easily bar hop from one place to another. At the crossing of Ta Hien Street and Luong Ngoc Quyen, tourists will sit on the pavement or the typical plastic stools and enjoy their beer while taking in the night scene and whatever derelicts are left on the streets. < 115, E3>

2: Bank

Bank is a somewhat new nightclub that has taken the city by storm with its famous local DJ's packing the house every weekend, and fire shows performed right on the bar!
6th FL, 47 Hai Ba Trung St, Hoan Kiem | +84 944 903 232 | <116, E4>

3: Taboo

Located in the corner of Tay Ho Lake, at the southern end of Thanh Nien Street, Taboo is Hanoi's premier club on a boat. Staffs are decked out in sailor's outfits as they serve you Giroc and Smirnoff vodkas. Buying a bottle is the way to go here and prices aren't too bad considering the environs. Entrance and reserving a table can be tricky on busy nights, so be sure to arrive no later than 9 pm if you're rolling in with a large group.

2 Thuy Khue St, Pier 1, Tay Ho  + 84 977 598 585 | <117, D3>

4: West Lake Late Night Spots

In recent years this area has turned into the latest watering hole to hang around in. Even with the midnight curfew there is always one bar that manages to stay open until the last drunken survivor. Even though the probability of being open is favorable, it is still a 50/50 chance. What bar will be open the latest tonight?

Tay Tap - Acoustic live music sets off on the weekends and some weeknights. Expect a standing room only on weekend nights, as crowds will spill out onto the streets at peak hours. |

100 Xuan Dieu St, Tay Ho | +84 985 892 858 | <118, B3>

88 Lounge - Newbie to the Tay Ho scene gives you a bit more space if you're feeling packed at Tay Tap. The 4th floor has an especially great view of Tay Ho Lake. | 88 Xuan Dieu St, Tay Ho  | + 84 4 3718 8029 | <119, B3>

Madake - Got a bit of a relaxed hippie style to it and has a cool courtyard downstairs facing the lake | 81 Xuan Dieu St, Tay Ho | +84 4 6776 6665 | <120, B3>

Hanoi Rock City - Hip and big indoor and outdoor place that is famous for holding music events and flying in DJ's from abroad. | 27/52 To Ngoc Van St, Tay Ho | +84 163 316 6170 | <121, A3>

5: Phuc Tan (aka Light House)

Phuc Tan is the oldest club to stay open after wee hours of the night and is most of the time, the safest bet after 2 am. Expect to find a mixed crowd and lack of room, much like a rave club from the 80's. However, it is right by the riverbank and most taxi drivers know where it is.
57, Group 4A, Phuc Tan St, Hoan Kiem | <122, E3>

6: Khu 9 (Zone 9)

An old factory area turned office center and meeting point for designers during the daytime and partygoers by nighttime. This new and upcoming area houses several hip clubs, which allow convenient barhopping till the crack of dawn, and up up until now, have not had any police visits. Thankfully we have made this an authority-free publica-tion.
9 Tran Thanh Tong St, Hai Ba Trung | <123, F5>

 7: Night Crawl

With the risk of getting lost in the concrete jungle or a sea of alcohol, we wanted to share some Hanoi watering-hole-hopping insight. At sunset head to Summit Lounge (weather-proof) or Sunset Bar (sunshine-dependent) for some pre-drinks, then continue to a delicious dinner place to prepare your stomach for what's to come. Alterwards, head to Rooftop Bar and enjoy the view. To avoid the desperate moment that comes after the lights are switched on and all the cinderella's are gone, move on to the next place before midnight. This could either be Taboo or Khu 9 (Zone 9) depending on what you prefer: hippie retro or sleek white ibiza beach beds, either one will get you into a happy mood. If these places haven't satisfied your party appetite, hop in a taxi and get yourself to Tay Ho for some more bar hopping. For a final nightcap or the more adventurous one, check out Phuc Tan (aka Light House).

I: See It

1: Late-night Market Mayhem

If you've had enough of drinking but are still looking for something exciting, visit the flower market off Au Co Street or the Long Bien fruit and vegetable market. Both come alive around 2 am and don't end till 6 am. This is where the shops and retailers come to buy products at a wholesale price. You may not be able to buy anything but you will certainly have another experience to add to your trip.
Long Bien Market | Yen Phu St, next to Long Bien bridge | <124, E3>
Quang Ba Flower Market | 236 Au Co St, at the edge of Tay Ho (West Lake), almost straight across 111 Xuan Dieu.
| <125, A3>

II: DO IT

1: Walker's Paradise

If you are a serious photographer looking to get that perfect photo of the beautiful architecture without the swarming vehicles obstructing your shot, then explore the old quarter after midnight. The streets are mysteriously empty and can be a haven for motivated photographers. Take the chance to wander around the streets of the old quarter and see the breathtaking beauty from a whole different perspective

III: Taste It

1: Xoi Yen

This place serves sticky rice with a selection of meat. Great for those who have had too much to drink and are in need of some late night grub! Unfortunately, if the police do come, be prepared to wait inside 10 to 15 minutes until the coast is clear and the metal doors can be drawn again. 35B Nguyen Huu Huan St, Hoan Kiem | +84 4 3934 1950 | <126, E3>

2: Tong Duy Tan (aka Food Street)

This strip of food stalls next to each other serves up all kinds of Vietnamese street food. Most of them are typical street food hubs with small plastic chairs and tables, but what differentiates these places from other stalls you'll find all around the city is that these are among few that are open 24/7, hence you will see some party animals, locals, and tourists passing through for a late night snack. Discovery Hanoi City

Good Morning In Hanoi French Quarter

I : See IT
  1. Mausoleum & Its Surroundings:
The Mausoleum stands proudly and conveniently next to Ba Dinh Square. This is the resting place of Vietnam's most beloved uncle and founder of the Vietnamese communist party, Mr. Ho Chi Minh. Inside the Mausoleum people can pay their respects to him as his body rests peacefully in a glass tomb. So peacefully, you might even mistake his body for a wax doll. As a result of many people pilgrimaging to visit Uncle Ho, the lines are quite long yet move quickly as you are not allowed to halt the flow of traffic. Take note that the Mausoleum is closed to visitors during the months of October and November. The dress code and rules for entry are also very strict; you must wear shirts with sleeves and long trousers or you will be turned away. No shorts, cameras, hats or bags are allowed. No exceptions, not even if you put on your best smile.

77 Ngoc Ha St, Ba Dinh | +84 4 3845 5128 | closed Mon & Fri 8.00 - 10.30 | <1, D4>

The Mausoleum is also the center of a magnificent complex that contains the Ho Chi Minh Museum, rich with fascinating historical scriptures, propaganda, and remnants from the Vietnam War. Also within the complex is the One Pillar Pagoda, offering nice photo opportunities, unique architecture, and an interesting legend of how it was built based on a dream that King Ly Thai To once had. While wandering, you will find yourself lost in the architectural beauty of the surrounding buildings and villas.

19 Ngoc Ha St, Ba Dinh | +84 4 3845 5435 | Mon & Fri 8.00 - 72.00, Tue-Thu, Sat & Sun 8.00 - 77.00 | <2, D4>

Being that it was the first university in Vietnam, built in 1076, you may be able to guess why it was named The Temple of Literature. Equipped with
open courtyards, beautiful gardens, loads of history and an air of holiness, it becomes clear why so many Vietnamese locals and students flock here, drawing in crowds of tourists as well. The best time to pass through this educational sanctuary is between April and November when students flock here for their graduation photos.

58 Quoc Tu Giam St, Dong Da | +84 4 3823 5601 | 7.30 - 17.30 | <3, E4>

    3: Ethnology Museum

The Ethnology Museum is potentially one of the most impressive museums in Hanoi. You can see the museum on your own, except you will not get i the same experience as you would with a guide explaining the history behind displayed objects, documents, and stories only a local would know. When hiring a guide, you can either play it safe and book a guide in advance, or you can wing it at the entrance and grab one of the guys out front eager to show off his knowledge for a few extra bucks. For a truly full experience we recommend a call or visit to Hanoi Imperial Hotel. <4, C5>

Hanoi Imperial Hotel | 44 Hang Hanh St, Hoan Kiem | +84 4 3933 5555 everytime.

    4: Long Bien Bridge

Designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower, Long Bien Bridge is Hanoi's oldest bridge and stretches across the Red River. This ancient landmark doesn't take much time to see, but it is worth a visit if you happen to pass it. If you can't make it in the morning, the bridge is as beautiful to visit around sunset time. Try the grilled corn being sold curbside, which is harvested right below the bridge.

Tip! As you walk along the bridge, I you can find the stairs leading down under the bridge and follow a small road that runs along the river to a little beach, nice green landscape, and a quaint place for a quick escape. Another alternative for the more adventurous one would be to hop on a motorbike and as you cross the bridge take a left at the end of it and continue straight. As you are on this dyke road, try out one of the streets to your left and get the chance to see another side of Hanoi. <5, F2>

As legend has it, an ancient turtle lives in Hoan Kiem Lake and is the same turtle-god that gave Le Loi a sword to defeat the enemies from China and free Vietnam. The locals believe to this day that the same turtle is still living in the water and every now and then it appears. If you have time to spare, have a look out on Hoan Kiem Lake and see if you're lucky enough to catch the only one left alive in the lake amongst four specimens in the world. Although, don't waste too much time waiting for this creature to surface, as you can see another turtle preserved inside the Ngoc Son Temple in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. <6, F4>

Hanoi's lively Old Quarter is comprised of 36 streets packed with shops selling a variety of different goods. Each street was originally named after its primary product or service being sold, but over time some things have been replaced with others. This is a must-see part of Hanoi and nearly impossible to miss. Take in the unique personality of this area, especially when lit up at night and see if you can guess the names of the streets based on the items being sold. <7, E3>

II : Do IT

    1: Early Morning Exercise

The locals love waking up early before sunrise for their morning exercise. Head over to Hoan Kiem Lake around 6 am and enjoy the peaceful flow from groups of people practicing Tai Chi. For those who wish for something more upbeat in the early hours of the morning, you can take part in a group dance exercise that may be just as much fun to watch as it is to do. You will see for yourself why. <8, F4>

    2: Cooking Classes

Join one of the Street Eat tours and enjoy an amazing food journey with a professional chef while you discover the wonders of Vietnamese street food and learn to cook Vietnamese- style. A great way to impress people back home!

    3: Hanoi on Wheels

Whatever you fancy there are unique and extraordinary ways to explore the city. How about catching a Cyclol? It used to be the most common mode of transportation for locals, although over time it has sadly become more of a tourist attraction. These cycle taxis will take you around town for some photo ops.

For a truly unique tour in the city get in touch with Asiana Travel Mate (also see Around Tay Ho (West Lake) under Good Day). If you're in search of something less strenuous, we would like to suggest you call Sofitel Metropole's concierge (+84 4 3826 6919) for a chauffeur driven Citroen from the good old days.

Hanoi Imperial Hotel | 44 Hang Hanh St, Hoan Kiem | +84 4 3933 5555 everytime.

4: Pool Hang & Golf Hits

The sun is out and you're craving a suntan, but your hotel doesn't have a pool? No problem. Make like the Hanoi expats and xe om over to the Thang Loi Hotel or Hanoi Club where anyone is welcome for a small penny. If you've had enough of the sun, head up to the driving range deck and shoot some balls across the lake as you enjoy one of few beautiful views in the city.

Thang Loi Hotel | 200 Yen Phu St, Tay Ho | +84 4 3829 4277 | <10,C3>
Hanoi Club | 76 Yen Phu St, Tay Ho | +84 4 3823 87 75 | <10,C3>

    5: Village Bicycle Tour

Say goodbye to the noisy traffic and bicycle towards lush green rice fields, vegetable plantations and a famous snake farm where you'll be welcomed by heaps of snakes. Here you'll have the chance to touch, catch and even eat the snake. If you're not sure how to get there, you can book a guide with the best ones in town, Hanoi Imperial Hotel Tours.
Hanoi Imperial Hotel | 44 Hang Hanh St, Hoan Kiem | +84 4 3933 5555 everytime.

III: DARE IT

    1: Motorbike Madness

If you found crossing the street to be child's play and are looking for something a little more pulse raising, we would suggest you rent a motorbike and drive through the city. Feel the adrenaline rush as you roll the bike out onto the busy street and become one with the chaotic flow. Contact our friends in Flamingo. They will hook you up safe and sound for the drive.

Good Evening In Hanoi French Quarter

I: SEE IT

    1: Flag Ceremony

Every day around 9 pm a parade of soldiers in white uniform take place in front of the Mausoleum near Ba Dinh Square to perform a flag ceremony. This is also a good place for people watching, as the locals like to come here for a walk in their pajamas and enjoy the beautifully lit up area. You can also catch the flag raising ceremony in the morning if that suits your time frame better. <74, D3>

II: DO IT

    2: The Night Market

Every weekend, a long strip of street in the Hanoi Old Quarter is sectioned off and packed like sardines with myriads of people crowded around makeshift stands selling all kinds of novelties. If lacquer ware is more your style, take a walk along Hang Trong Street where you may be awed by the myriad of handcrafted selections. On the nearby Nha Tho Street you will also see some lovely boutique shops, one of which is a famous accessory brand, Ipa Nima, that designs and locally produces amazing hand bags.
